food tasting @ shinkei

A long while back, I had a food tasting session at Shinkei. What I really loved most was the sashimi (Japanese delicacy consisting of very fresh raw meat or fish sliced into thin pieces) of course!

I'm a huge sucker for salmon because I love the way it feels in my mouth. Such a gross way to explain it, I know. However, salmon lovers would agree with me!

Shinkei is a Japanese ala-carte buffet restaurant located in the heart of Toa Payoh. Unlike the usual buffet of having sushi or dishes via a conveyer belt, at Shinkei, all you have to do is to sit and wait for your dishes to be served to you. The presentation of food is well taken care of and you'll be sure to have Instagram worthy #foodporn pictures!

Thank you Hazel and the Shinkei staff for the warm hospitality! I truly did enjoy stuffing myself!

dinner @ koh grill & sushi bar

Check out the nomlicious Shiok Maki from Koh Grill & Sushi Bar! It's really tasty, I believe due to the flavouring of the sauce (somewhat like the flaming sauce served in the Manhattan Fish Market).

Koh Grill is pretty much busy everyday, and I would recommend you to make a reservation so you do not have to join the long queue. It's a really nice place for a gathering as well.

Don't forget to order the Shiok Maki (original version) - a person alone can finish one portion by himself, so gauge your dishes from there! I've also tried their teppenyaki beef, it's juicy and really, really delicious. Not to mention their salmon sashimi, each slice is thick, fresh and *slurps*.

food tasting @ ippin cafe bar

Back to writing and reviving this blog which was dead for a few months due to me being busy with commitments in council.

Here's snippets of my food tasting session at IPPIN CAFE BAR. I'm really digging the interior and the authentic #BetterThanMom homemade Japanese dishes that they offer, especially the Wasabi Salt/Garlic Soy Beef Steak! Not to mention, their Strawberry Yoghurt Sake takes a whole new twist on alcohol.

Their Cold Yuzu Noodles had my taste buds delightfully flying, with it being a 'lil sour and refreshing. We were served with Darjeeling Tea where for the first time, the tea is fermented twice and water from the mountains are used. It was also turned into a form of jelly, where the taste was light and smooth.

Thank you Hazel and the staff at IPPIN for the hospitality!

brunch @ rokeby bistro

As my list of "tried and tasted" waffles get longer, I really wonder if they have become my substitute for breakfast and lunch.

Along the stretch of Wimbly Lu is Rokeby Bistro, a quaint cafe with excellent service. Instead of the usual Egg Benedicts for lunch, I opted for the irresistible Fruits & Nutella Waffles - something I'd gladly indulge in. For $11.90, you get strawberries, blueberries and bananas atop Nutella, with icing sugar coated waffles.

I love how crispy yet fluffy waffles were, and I loved the presentation even more. This waffles are definitely a must try - kudos to the chef for making such delicious waffles!

dinner @ marche wovenpick

You would never expect a $19.90 steak to be as tasteful as this. Marche Wovenpick's weekly specials has the Angus Beef Steak up for grabs!

Described as an "Angus Beef Steak with Potato Salad and Asparagus", this dish is large enough so that two can share it and fill their stomachs. The two thin slices of steak was cooked to a medium-well done state, easy to cut through and chew.

Grilled with a non-spicy somewhat black pepper-like sauce, the steak was indeed delicious, but started to become more "jelat" as I reached the three-quarter mark of the steak. The potato salad however, was actually basic mashed potato. You'll have to add condiments (salt, black pepper, chilli flakes) provided on the side to add a little more zest. The asparagus was plain, but was a little tough to chew through for my liking.

The Baked Salmon with Potato Salad was also delicious, but joined the "jelat" team. The potato salad however, was much more delicious than the one in the steak dish! This dish is also a weekly special, at $21.90! Do try it when it's back!

tea break @ grin affair

Finally got to try the waffles at Grin Affair that my friend was talking about!

I'm not a fan of ice cream (cue the dramatic "what do you mean you don't like ice cream?!"), but sometimes, exceptions are made, especially with the horrendously erratic weather.

Served with cookies and creme gelato, this $9 waffle came with the shop's little snacks that can be found sold in jars. The matcha flavoured snack was not my favourite, however, the chocolate flavoured snack was not bad! It's albeit hard to cut through and will send your snack flying (trust me). Not to mention, they had a bite-sized brownie which was not too bad as well!

The other waffle came with a dark chocolate gelato, with peanut butter drizzle!

Other than that, the waffles were made of soy meringue and were definitely different from the other waffles I've tried so far! It's a little fluffy, and a little crispy on the outside. The best part of this dish? The cookies and creme!

lunch @ artistry

This was my simple lunch before heading over to a hotel site visit. My number one pie choice is always the key lime pie - it's refreshing, and mouthwatering!

To go with it, a cuppa was ordered! Cappucino, I think.

Artistry's key lime pie is definitely one of the top few I have tasted so far. It's definitely worth travelling for! Sitting alfresco, you can enjoy my hobby of people-watching.

brunch @ montana brew bar

Updating this space again as I finally found time to do so in between my hectic schedule of school, assignments and what-nots.

In between lessons, my friend and I headed over to the highly raved Montana Brew Bar for lunch. She really wanted the red velvet waffles, but unfortunately, due to the supplier delivering the wrong red food colouring, they were unable to sell it.

She settled for waffles with chicken in it and an apple juice while I chose the truffle jalapeƱos mac and cheese waffles and a latte. With our favourite side of truffle fries, we were good to go!

The waffles were unique and had flavor, unfortunately, one waffle was too much for a person - I would suggest sharing it with your friend! The truffle fries was really good though.

Montana Brew Bar also has a few spots in the cafe where you can get a good shot of your food, be it a flat lay or a close up! Just be sure to get a seat nearer the wall for a better background.

What are your favourite waffle cafes? Share them with me in the comments box below!

dinner @ the holqa cafe

It's been a while since I updated this space, and what better to jumpstart the engine than with food!

The team and I had dinner at The Holqa Cafe a day before the start of camp. The quaint and cosy cafe is the new kid on the streets of Katong.

For the first time, I had brunch for dinner - eggs benedict with smoked salmon (my first time too). It was superbly delicious!

I also had a go at their highly recommended asian pulled pork knuckle pasta. It was definitely an interesting twist to the usual pasta, with a slightly soupy side.

Not to mention, their dishes are instagram-worthy! Every dish is plated with love, and the latte art? A thousand plus points! I can never emphasise how much I appreciate these little things done to make a dining experience a personal one!

If you're going in a big group, do ring them up to place a reservation and ensure seats!

plain vanilla bakery

I decided to grab some cupcakes from Plain Vanilla Bakery for a friend's 21st. I couldn't resist myself and decided to get four more to share.

Earl grey lavender, salted caramel, red velvet and cookies & creme were the four picked. The earl grey and salted caramel were both on the sweet side. The cookies & creme was absolutely delicious! However, I prefer Twelve Cupcake's red velvet to PVB.

I would suggest trying PVB out as their cupcakes are definitely scrumdiliyumcious. Don't forget to pick up their salted caramel cupcake - I highly recommend it!
